A massive and powerful mountain range running primarily through the states of Arkansas and Missouri, the range continues even into Oklahoma and Kansas as well. Geologically unique, it is actually considered a region of high and dissected plateau. The most extensive range between the Rocky’s and the Appalachians, it covers nearly 47,000 square miles thorough four states and makes up the area known as the Interior Highlands.
Home to many animals, plants and ecosystems, the Ozarks are considered one of the best areas in the U.S. to enjoy an outdoor vacation experience. In the state of Arkansas, the mountains represent the most popular region in the state. Within the Ozark Mount-in region of Arkansas, a number of top destinations for travel can be found including:
Buffalo National River
Bull Shoals Lake
Norfolk Lake
White River
Within these areas, visitors have the opportunity to relax and enjoy nature at its most beautiful and rich.
For example, within the Buffalo National River area, world class water sports including canoeing and kayaking are popular. In addition, fly fishing for small mouth bass, hiking the Buffalo River Trail and camping are also available throughout the area. Elsewhere, Bull Shoals and Norfolk Lakes provide world class fishing, camping and many other watersports as well as hundreds of miles of hiking, biking and horseback riding trails.
From national forests to state parks, small cozy cabins to rustic back country camping, cities and towns to vast unspoiled wilderness, the Ozarks of Arkansas have it all. Like many areas withing this apart of the country, much of the monetary gain of the local areas were based on natural resources including petroleum and animals, the most popular natural resource in the region by far was lumber. Like most of the U.S., the lumber era saw millions and millions of acres of forest cut and burned. Today, most of the area, thanks to conservation, has recovered. Good news for the area, its people and tourists from around the world.
Today, tourism is one of the fastest growing industries in the region. Whether enjoying a locally harvest glass of wine, canoeing down the white river, enjoying the nightlife of Branson or any other of a hundred other things to see and do, find out for yourself what makes this region, one of the most popular for travel today.
